Bali hotels ready welcoming international travelers

Bali hotels ready welcoming international travelers

Bali hotels ready welcoming international travellers again, according to the Bali Hotels Association’s (BHA) Government Relations Director, Fransiska Handoko.. Waiting on the government's go-ahead, travel bubbles and a lack of domestic tourists are the overriding concerns for a Bali travel industry trying to battle through the COVID pandemic according to key leading speakers at the recent 'Bali Tourism - The Way Back' virtual event organized by Delivering Asia Communications and C9 Hotelworks together with the Bali Hotels Association and Horwath HTL.Fielding questions from respected travel journalist Mimi Hudoyo, TTG Asia's Editor Indonesia, Handoko was candid about the efforts of BHA members and their responses to the catastrophic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, which has caused more disruption to the island's main industry than previous crisis.

However, Handoko pointed out, despite preparations by the island's hospitality businesses, it is the responsibility of the Bali's provincial government to make the final ruling. "Our members are more than ready to reopen, with hotels continuing training programmes and maintaining standard operating procedures. We are ready to welcome guests but the decision must come from the government."

Speaking on Bali's interest in creating travel bubbles with China, South Korea, Japan and Australia, Handoko said, "Bali and Indonesia are ready for travel bubbles. However, the rest of the world still sees Indonesia as a high-risk country, so these plans are still in the discussion stage. It may be more logical to form travel bubbles within ASEAN because of the shorter travel times. But we are still observing how the situation will evolve. One of the event highlights was an 'on-the-ground' hotel perspective from Emily Subrata, Director, Sudamala Resorts and Lucienne Anhar, Co-Owner and Managing Director, Tugu Hotels & Restaurants, who discussed the different methods hotel owners have used to counter the during the pandemic. Bali expecting two million Chinese tourist next year

Bali expecting two million Chinese tourist next year

Bali expecting two million Chinese tourist in 2021 as coronavirus lockdowns prevent other travelers from getting to the island. The Bali Tourism Board, a peak industry body representing tourism operators on the island, expects a record-breaking 2 million Chinese tourists to visit Bali next year, far surpassing visitors from any other nation.China became the biggest source of international visitor arrivals in 2017 when 1.35 million Chinese tourists visited the island, eclipsing visitors from Australia as Bali's biggest source of tourists for the first time.

"We believe they will be drawn to Bali in even bigger numbers than before because Chinese people no longer feel very safe in America or Europe because of racism and the high rates of coronavirus infections and with the International Air Transport Association not expecting air travel to return to pre-COVID-19 levels until 2023, China looks to extend its dominance over Bali's tourism market.

"Southeast Asia will become the preferred destination for them at least for 2021 and Thailand and Bali will get the lion's share of their business," said Kurniawan. While up to 2 million Chinese visitors in a year would almost single-handedly reboot Bali's tourism-dependent economy which has been in hibernation since Indonesia banned new foreign tourists in March, not everyone on the island is happy about the prospect of so many Chinese tourists descending on the island.

Bali expecting two million Chinese tourist in 2021

A 2018 investigation by the BTB on so-called 'zero-dollar tours' coming out of China -- low-cost group packages where tourists spend much larger amounts at Chinese-owned gift shops -- found that on some tours people were spending as little as $60 for flights and hotels, with the vast majority of their holiday spending contractually committed to Chinese-owned souvenir shops.

This was the cause of disagreement between Bali and the Tourism Ministry's plan to bring 20 million tourists to Indonesia each year," said Christopher Burns, business development manager of the official Bali app. "It doesn't matter if you bring in 200 million tourists if the spend-per-person is super-low. What Bali needs is better quality tourists.'

Bali expecting two million Chinese tourist in 2021

According to Kurniawan, the cold hard calculus of the pandemic will probably weed out lower spending tourists.Because of the ongoing need for social distancing, groups of large travelers will totally disappear while cheap travel will also disappear at least for the first half of 2021 as people in that segment have lost their jobs or taken salary cuts," Kurniawan said. But the middle segment and the luxury segment will increase in Bali because fear of COVID-19 will mean they will prefer to stay in villas than hotels, and we have thousands of villas in Bali," said Kurniawan, adding that new laws introduced last February have virtually brought an end to zero-dollar tours to Bali.

But Venny Hermawan, owner of D Varee Diva, a 130-room hotel in Kuta that caters almost exclusively to Chinese tourists, says only the pandemic brought an end to zero-dollar tours. From an operations side, we still struggled with the same heavy bargaining power of wholesale agents in China," she says. "Our advertised room rate is $32 per night but they pay only $18. If you refuse, they go to your competitor."The hotel owner says small Balinese operators, those selling T-shirts, sate sticks and the like, do not benefit one iota from mass Chinese tourism.

Bali expecting two million Chinese tourist in 2021

No way will they spend a cent at those places because when they come here they have a full itinerary organized by their travel guides who take them to shopping centers for kickbacks," Hermawan explains. "It's impossible for those tourists to even walk around the street by themselves. Different cultural norms are also a concern for some Bali tour operators, who worry that large numbers of Chinese tourists will put off visitors from other nations. Still, Yulie Su, a 35-year-old Shanghai native who made his fortune as a venture capitalist in his twenties and now spends his days riding waves in Bali describes the view from the Chinese side of the table.

"I can understand why a lot of Westerners think Chinese tourists are rude but they don't even know what they are doing is wrong,And why is it wrong? It's just a different style," said Yulie. "When Chinese people are happy, we are loud, but Westerners say we shouldn't be.Yulie agrees there is potential for Chinese tourists to increase their spend in Bali.

Bali expecting two million Chinese tourist in 2021

"Our vacations are very short, only three or four days, so we don't care how much it costs. Some of the luxury resorts in Bali are very good but overall Bali is not very well developed," he said. "The hygiene standards and pollution are actually worse than in China. If they want to charge more, they have to develop more."

Yulie is also sceptical that Chinese tourists will return to Bali in such great numbers in 2021.Bali is one of our favorites. We love the people because they respect us more than they do in Europe or America.," Yulie says. "But fear of coronavirus will remain. Even when the borders open, Chinese are going to pause. We are very cautious people. The Balinese are also being cautious in their own way with a trial run for domestic tourism tipped to start in August.

Bali expecting two million Chinese tourist in 2021

We're expecting a lot of people from Jakarta to come for staycations and see if the hotels and restaurants can provide service in line with the new health and safety regulation," says Gek Indah Dispara, head of marketing at the Bali Government Tourism Office. "If things go well, gradually we will open for international tourists. Dispara won't comment on the BTB's projection for 2 million Chinese tourists in 2021, saying the focus for now is entirely on domestic tourism.Of course we hope they will return," she says. "You know Balinese never complained about Chinese tourists because the Chinese have already been here for 100 years and adapted," Dispara says.Next to Batur, our biggest lake, there's is Hindu Temple with a Chinese temple inside of it. This shows the closeness of our cultures."

Australian inmate Kerobokan jail tried to kill himself

Australian inmate Kerobokan jail tried to kill himself

Australian prisoner Kerobokan prison Will Cabantog attempting to take own life when he was sentenced to one year in jail and has one month left. A Melbourne nightclub promoter locked up in a Bali prison has revealed his newfound drive to promote mental health awareness after he tried to hang himself with a makeshift noose. Will Cabantog is serving a one year sentence at Kerobokan prison after police raided the Lost City nightclub in Bali hot spot Canggu and found 1.12 grams of cocaine on July 19.

Fellow promoter David Van Ierseal was also arrested though only served nine months. Although he only has one month left behind bars, Cabantog admitted to Herald Sun it has been a difficult journey that has involved paying for his safety from other dangerous prisoners and a failed suicide attempt.

One night, the 36-year-old waited until after guards carried out the last head count. He then headed to the jail bathrooms with a noose fashioned out of t-shirts. Cabantog stepped up onto a stand made of gallon bottles before the makeshift noose snapped and his body hit the bathroom tiles, leaving him in a broken heap of tears.I didn't want to be remembered for coming to Bali and doing a line of coke and getting caught and thrown in a Bali jail and taking my life,' Cabantog said. When you are stripped of everything and don't have much left. It's all about the legacy you want to leave.'Cabantog reveals the near death experience was just the tip of the iceberg of his traumatising time in jail life.

Kerobokan jail was built to house 300 criminals, though currently holds more than 1,400.To make matters worse, maximum security prisoners, such as rapists and murderers, share open spaced dorms with minimum security prisoners.Cabantog says he has rented his own private cell - which can cost $250 a month - as a safety precaution. Even access to clean water comes costs $50, while cell protection and cleaning is set at $150. With all odds against him, Cabantog has worked hard to reshape his life and breaks up his day with meditating, teaching English and working on his fitness while he studies for an online certificate in mental health.

He has also received support from Bali Nine's Matthew Norman - who also shares the prison and has become a spiritual leader of sorts to other prisoners as he serves his life sentence for drug trafficking. His experiences have also prompted him to kickstart a mental health awareness campaign #speaklesslistenmore.Cabantog observed he had become a very different man to the lavish nightlife identity he peddled on social media.

Prior to his arrest, Cabantog was often photographed enjoying the party scene and posed for pictures along the likes of Australia's Honey Badger and Eddy Maguire.

House of Om, a holistic retreat in Bali's cultural hub of Ubud, found itself in a hot water after a video went viral showing at least sixty foreign yoga enthusiasts crammed together at a gathering last week. Few of the cross-legged participants wore masks or kept a distance from each other, sparking widespread anger in Bali where coronavirus infections have been on the rise. On Wednesday, the island's immigration department said it would deport retreat co-founder Wissam Barakeh, 45, to his native Syria for breaking rules that prohibit gatherings of more than two dozen people. He didn't try to cancel the event even after the number of participants exceeded what's allowed by the government," said Jamaruli Manihuruk, the head of Bali's justice and legal office.

Barakeh was in Bali on a temporary visa, is now being held at an immigration centre until plans to return him to his homeland. The volume of flights to and from Bali has plummeted in the midst of the global pandemic and Bali has not direct flights to Syria.
