World cleanest village awarded on third place Balinese village Penglipuran

World cleanest village awarded on third place Balinese village Penglipuran

Bangli, beautiful Bangli, your diverse selection of natural attractions is impressively mind-blowing. Blessed and charmed with heaps of tangible beauties, this regency also has a village that has been dubbed as one of the world’s most beautiful and clean village known as Desa Penglipuran or Penglipuran Village.

This well-conserved traditional village is situated in Kubu Village of Bangli, Bali and has a total distance of about 45 km and travel time of 1 hour from the centre of Denpasar. The strategic location of Penglipuran Village is just ideal because it is perfectly located along the distinguished touristic Kintamani route. Thus, it is easily accessed by the majority of the domestic and foreign tourists.

Honoured as one out of three cleanest villages in the world, the purity, cleanliness and environment can be reflected at the village; no trash or waste scattered around, no pollution and no vehicles passing through the main road of the village. These beliefs have been inculcated and prevailed in awig-awig, the native ideology of the village.

Penglipuran is also believed to be one of the Bali Aga villages in Bali, and is said to have existed centuries ago ― long before the prospering rules of Majapahit in Bali. As a consequence, the existing Balinese culture and traditions are deep-seated and can be presently perceived in the community’s lifestyle at Penglipuran Village.

Looking back at the history of this Village, the development initially came about from Bayung Gede Village in Kintamani. It was formed during the era of the Bangli Kingdom, whose ancestors originated in the latter village. One fascinating thing about this village is that the word ‘Penglipuran‘ derived from the term ‘lipur’, which means ‘to entertain’ or ‘to comfort’. Up untill today, Penglipuran Village is known to be a place that can hearten and uplift anyone who is paying the village a visit.

panglipuran-bamboo-forest.jpg

Few of the bases as to why tourists love to flock around this village are that the linear patterns of the settlements that are methodically assembled and terraced, the uniqueness of the angkul-angkul (entrance) in each and every home belonging to the residents, the preservation of bamboo trees, a place of exile that serves as a punishment for men who practise polygamy known as karang memadu (note: this village prohibits polygamy and this exists as an effort to protect and respect the women at the village), and monument of the local hero named Anak Agung Gede Anom Mudita.

The building structure of Penglipuran Village uses the concept of Tri Angga which literally translates to Three Parts and it is composed of the uppermost and most sacred part (temples), the intermediate part (settlements of the villagers) and the bottommost part that represents impurity (graveyards).

In comparison to other villages in the island, the angkul-angkul or main entrance of every home at Penglipuran Village has its own uniqueness and particularity. This village is expressly concerned about the preservation of bamboo plants, hence the various types of bamboo that are present in the bamboo forest. Ultimately, this enhances the beauty and brings freshness that already exists to the extraordinary village.

Visitors are more than welcomed to make use of the facilities provided around the area, such as parking lot, toilets, a Balinese-style pavilion known as wantilan or balewarung, and a favourite of many – photobooth backdrop!

Experience the real deal and revel yourself in the culture and heritage of Bali at Penglipuran Village, one of the popular destinations in the island. And when you do, don’t forget to try their exceptionally unique loloh cemcem and klepon ubi ungu especially made by the local community!

The Hindu people of Bali celebrating Galungan

The Hindu people of Bali celebrating Galungan

Today 30/05/2018 in Bali the Hindu community celebrate the day of Galungan,

which commemorates the triumph of Dharma over Adharma, or good against evil.
On this day the Balinese welcome the spirits of deceased

relatives who come to visit earth during this time.
Businesses close down and everyone puts on their devine traditional dress

to spend time with family. It's like Christmas Day.

8723b5f7-5321-4a1b-a233-35bdbfed53e6.jpg

On the lead up to Galungan Day all the  streets are lined with these beautiful long

ornamental bamboo poles called Panjor.
It takes a few men to actually erect these as they are quite heavy and intricately decorated.

If you look closely they have individual trinkets and detailed paintings,

naturally curved at the top and made out of harvest items such as rice, fruits, coconuts and coconut leaves.

Traditionally, Galungan day sees the slaughtering of pigs for communal feasts,

as well as baking traditional rice cakes

Today on Galungan Day We drove the Backstreets of Bali on our scooters and it was just a pleasure,

riding through the traditional towns, leafy green streets and all the decorations hanging over the roads.

It just made me feel all kinds of positive vibes

f37ace24-f888-4511-83df-79041afab374.jpg

Celebrants in traditional attire attend temple ceremonies with their families,

bringing with them offerings of fruits to temples and family shrines – which they share and enjoy after prayers.

The day of Galungan is important for the Balinese, similar to a new year,

when everyone returns to their families and home villages.

The ceremony surrounding Kuningan refers to special offerings made of yellow turmeric rice

Yellow is also the colour of the god Wisnu, the protector of the Hindu trinity.

Brief History and Legend As local legend goes, Galungan commemorates

a Balinese victory that involves the central figures of Indra (the Hindu god of thunder,

rain and lightning) and the Balinese king, known as Mayadenawa,

who denied his subjects the worship of Hinduism.

So powerful was the king that no one could overcome him.

The conquest of Java's Majapahit army back then had little effect.

Battles ensued until finally Indra descended from the heavens to defeat the king.

The battle raged in Tampaksiring, Gianyar, where the king was finally subdued.

While under siege, he tried to escape by various ways including via supernatural means

such as turning into a statue, a stone, and a wild boar. He easily fooled the troops, but not Indra.

Mayadenawa then retreated to the jungle leaving behind disguised footsteps,

hoping his assailants would not easily track them. Indra's magic arrow put an end to the rebel king.

The legendary site where he bled to death became a freshwater spring, the current-day site of the

Tirta Empul Temple. The king’s slanting footprints gave the name to the valley area,

later pronounced as Tampak Siring – ‘slanting footprints’. The Balinese and Majapahit armies

honoured Indra, commemorating the defeat of the king as Galungan,

the day of victory of dharma over adharma.

33862410_1903857709645644_2872422570777378816_n.jpg

The decorative bamboo poles signify upheld Hinduism and wisdom. So traumatized were the people

that they were not easily convinced of the king’s defeat, believing that he had probably used his magic

to turn into a statue, tree or even another animal. To overcome public fear,

an official announcement of the defeat was made 10 days later,

commemorated as the day of Kuningan, which has two meanings, ‘to announce’ and ‘of yellow’.
