Mount Agung volcano has erupted violently for the second time on July 2 nd 2018

sending "flares of incandescent lava" cascading down its mountainside

The second eruption happened at shortly after 9pm local time according to Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency, lasting around seven minutes.

Mount Agung's latest eruption sent a thick column of ash more than 6,000 feet high into the air and comes hours

after an earlier eruption at 6.19am local time (11.19pm Sunday BST) lasted three minutes and 47 seconds.

Local residents have been warned to stay alert for fast-flowing volcanic debris as lava swept through land as far as 1.2 miles away.

On Friday, Denpasar International Airport was shut for almost 12 hours shortly after Bali’s tallest volcano erupted into life for the first time in months.

Denpasar Airport, otherwise known as Ngurah Rai International Airport, remains open today despite Mount Agung’s new eruption.

A spokesman for airport operator Angkasa Pura said: "We're monitoring the eruption. The airport could be closed again if the eruption affects flight safety.

“These are exclusion zones put in place by the local authorities. If you’re in either exclusion zone, you should leave immediately.”

There are no restrictions on travel to Bali in general.

The current Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) alert level remains at level three for Mount Agung.

Monday’s eruption was smaller than Friday’s, which reached 2,500m high, and crucially did not spray ash across a wide area.

Mount Agung has been rumbling away for several months but its most recent big explosion was in November 2017 after seismic activity ramped up at dramatically in September.

The eruption was the first one in 50 years since 1,000 lost their lives in a devastating explosion in 1963.

The Indonesian National Disaster Management Authority briefly raised the volcano alert level to four, its highest possible level, in November for three months.
